Spring holidays are coming up, so what is the best way to spend it? Take them to the School Spring Holiday Events pack full of outdoor activities and fun for the whole family. My advertisement which is a print media (newspaper) was found on the Blacktown Advocate Paper.
Purpose:
The purpose of the advertisement (print media) is to firstly inform the reader (parents and 12 year old), the four ‘W’ terms. What is happening? Where the venue(s) are? When are the event(s)? And who is running it? This gives the reader information necessary to understand the first purpose of the advertisement. It also makes the reader aware of the event occurring.
The second purpose of the advertisement is to persuade the reader to go to the event(s). This has been established in various techniques. Subheadings and font size, just to name a few. The reader is also persuaded by the number of activities, which are intriguing and stimulating the young minds to discover what this truly is due to their vagueness.
Structure, Form and Layout:
The entire structure and layout of the advertisement has different images of various sizes that catch the eyes attention. This helps describe the specific event and what the readers are to expect. The layout of the advertisement is well organised and easy to follow. The text on the advertisement is size 12 which makes it reasonably easy to read.
The structure of the advertisement is in columns each (in one column) giving information of the event, time and venue, followed by a short description of the event. There are various font sizes used. The title with the biggest size immediately indicates what the advertisement is issuing.
Advertising features for Target Audience:
Features such as: Red plane, a boy sitting on a floaty donut, riding a wave and a magnifying glass encircling ‘3D Space Theatre’ all represent the aspects and key items of a 12 year old. These different features are vector lines to the text and information. The red plane represents the openness of a 12 year olds mind and the unusual places they will explore and discover. This makes it a feature.
A boy sitting on a floaty riding a wave and smiling symbolises new ways of action, adventure and cunningness to have fun. This makes it a feature. And the magnifying glass that’s surrounding the Space theatre event signifies the brain of a 12 year old, their ability to be fascinated by the unknown and gain knowledge of new initiatives. This makes it a feature.
This is only the selected objects that make the advertising targeted at 12 year olds. Activities listed such as Volcano Craft, Shrek and Fiona Visiting and Dinosaur Craft selects the target audience. Also fun facts and the title itself ‘School holidays guide’ suggests it’s for students that go to school. Adults are allowed to come but most of the activities and events are for the kids.
Written and Visual Techniques:
Written: The language of the advertisement is informal and there is less than medium levels of sophisticated words. The closest to a sophisticated word you can be is ‘array’ which is another word for collection, display, range etc. Some activities information is aimed to let the parents know before kids do about the certain requirements needed to participate in the activity.
There is alot of descriptive language used to raise the activity to higher standards which makes it more motivating to participate in. The advertisement also uses adjectives to kindle with our thoughts and feelings of being involved in the event. Not to mention those of a 12 year olds. The advertisement has effectively shown the most important events which they are contributing to those that aren’t. This is shown by text, different technique of presenting and larger font size than 12. But not than the title. The banner, behind the plane says ‘where to go and what to do’. This is a rhetorical question that specifies what your next move will be. It also makes you think ahead and realise opportunities awaiting you and your choice to take it or not.
Visual: the colour scheme of the advertisement is white with tints of blue and red. This designates the importance and clearness of the aim trying to be sent to the reader. The salient figure in the advertisement is note on the top, middle section saying “Our top picks”. And vector lines are present through the different images which are then eventually leaded to the text.
Overall the advertisement is moderately effective in persuading its point-of-view and if I were a 12 year old, I would certainly persuade my parents to participate in the event.
